I have been getting some good feedback on Azure\u2019s Computer Vision API<\/strong><\/em>, in particular, the OCR<\/strong><\/em> functionality. Although I am not working on any project that requires this functionality at the moment, I thought it would be a good idea to check out the service – just to be \u201cfuture ready\u201d<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

This article is not meant to be a detailed review of the OCR<\/strong><\/em> service, but merely to share my first experience with it, that is all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Go to Azure Portal<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0 and sign in.<\/p>\n

Click \u201cAll services\u201d<\/strong><\/em> in the menu bar and select \u201cCognitive Services\u201d<\/strong><\/em> under the group \u201cAI + Machine Learning\u201d<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now select \u201cComputer Vision\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Click \u201cCreate\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. The following screen requires you to configure the resource:<\/p>\n

Fill in the various fields and click \u201cCreate\u201d<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

It will take a a minute or two to deploy the service.<\/p>\n

Go to the Dashboard<\/strong><\/em> and click on the newly created resource \u201cOCR-Test\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. Click on the item \u201cKeys\u201d<\/strong><\/em> under \u201cResource Management\u201d<\/strong><\/em> group. You will see two keys:<\/p>\n

Copy the value of \u201cKEY 1\u201d<\/strong><\/em> field (you can use “KEY 2”<\/strong><\/em> as well). You will need this to make the REST API<\/strong><\/em> call.<\/p>\n

I wrote a Python<\/strong> program<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0to send a JPG<\/strong><\/em> file to the\u00a0OCR<\/strong><\/em> end point and save the returned data in a text file:<\/p>\n

To check the service, I used my iPhone X<\/strong><\/em> camera to capture one page of a homeopathy book that I have. Here is the image:<\/p>\n

I then ran my Python<\/strong><\/em> program to send this image to Azure<\/strong><\/em> and got the converted text.\u00a0 <\/span>Here it is:<\/p>\n

You can see that the conversion is nearly perfect, except for the marked area, where there is an extra character \u201ct\u201d<\/strong>. If you look carefully at the captured image, you will notice that there is some \u201cnoise\u201d<\/strong><\/em> due to the text on the reverse side of this page. My guess is that the extra \u201ct\u201d<\/strong> comes from the text on the reverse side. But other than that, it is perfect. I am quite pleased!<\/p>\n

I used the \u201cfree\u201d<\/strong><\/em> tier, so I am eligible for 5000 pages of OCR<\/strong><\/em> in a month. Pretty generous I would say!<\/p>\n

There is also a separate end point for handling handwritten images, but I did not explore that feature. Will try that one of these days.<\/p>\n
