Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> has supported free-form linguistic input for years, but the function FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> introduced in ver 14.1 makes that capability more functional for developers.<\/p>\n

FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> basically accepts a natural language expression or query and returns the corresponding answer<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let us look at some examples.<\/p>\n

Numerical Evaluation<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Instead of computing the 24th Fibonacci number<\/em> by writing an explicit formula in Mathematica<\/strong><\/em>, we pass on the natural language expression for the request and FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> computes the result for us. Convenient, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

In the second instance, it generates the correct formula for the given input. The third shows that we can write a compound expression involving two (or more) FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> calls since each is an expression that returns an answer.<\/p>\n

What about evaluating formulas as part of the natural language input? That is also possible. See the following examples.<\/p>\n

In the first example, we are computing Sine(90 deg)<\/strong><\/em>. The second example uses an extra argument HoldForm<\/strong><\/em>. This forces Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> to convert the input to a Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> expression but stops short of evaluating that expression.<\/p>\n

The third example returns a properly formatted Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> expression for the given input. This is convenient because we don\u2019t have to remember the exact syntax.<\/p>\n

The last example returns a TimeObject<\/strong><\/em> since \u201c5 pm\u201d<\/strong><\/em> represents Time<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

What about some general queries that have nothing to do with Maths<\/em> for formulas? Sure, that is taken care of too!<\/p>\n

The above examples are general knowledge<\/strong><\/em> queries and FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> handles them correctly.<\/p>\n

The examples so far show the diverse capabilities of FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em>. Does it mean it can handle every question we can think of? I don\u2019t think so. I get an error at least in one case:<\/p>\n

I guess such limitations can be expected, but hopefully FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> satisfies most requirements.<\/p>\n

Since FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> can be used as an expression, we can even use it in function arguments. In our final example, I am making a call to AstroGraphics<\/strong><\/em> function. This function is very useful for rendering a 2D view of celestial sphere.<\/p>\n

Notice that the first two arguments use FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em>. Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> evaluates these correctly and passes the result to the respective argument.<\/p>\n

In summary, FreeformEvaluate<\/strong><\/em> is a very useful function that acts as an NLP layer on top of the actual Mathematica<\/strong><\/em> function.<\/p>\n
